8 Musical Things I’m Grateful For

One of the best tools both Sara(h)’s have started using in recent years in our quest for balanced, healthy lives and careers is the “gratitude journal”.   Essentially it is any type of journal (big, small, fancy or even just some scrap paper) in which you write 8 things a day that you are grateful for (or more or less – totally up to you).  The important thing is that you stick to it and do it everyday.  This simple tool helps us to develop the “attitude of gratitude” and instead of ruminating on what we don’t have, we can see more clearly all the great things happening in our lives RIGHT NOW!  Even Oprah does it 😉 http://www.oprah.com/spirit/Oprahs-Gratitude-Journal-Oprah-on-Gratitude

So I thought it would be fun to make a post about gratitude towards all thing music.  Here are 8 musical things I’m grateful for right at this moment (in no specific order):

  1. The diversity of music.
  2. I love that there are so many different types and genres of music and I am immensely grateful that I have virtually unlimited access to any style thinkable.  I bet for every person in the world you would find a completely different “playlist” or “library” of tunes (even if that is just in one’s heads depending on the circumstance!).
  3. My flute.
  4. I just love my Nagahara!  I’m so grateful that I have the means to pay for such a high quality instrument (even if it took me 5 years to fully pay for it), and that so much care was put into the making of it and its ongoing maintenance.
  5. My music teachers.
  6. From my very first piano teacher, to my flute/piano teachers, masterclass clinicians, band teachers, conductors, professors, colleagues and even my own students!  I wouldn’t be the musician I am now without the incredible lessons I have learned, and continue to learn from every single one.
  7. Composers.
  8. Without these brilliant men and women I would pick up my flute and have nothing to play!
  9. Performers.
  10. Some of the most memorable moments of my life thus far have been attending live music concerts or productions and being completely moved and transported to another realm by the performers involved.
  11. Opportunities for travel and adventure.
  12. Japan, Brazil, USA and all over Canada – just to name a few places that music has taken me.  I’m currently writing this post while visiting the incredibly beautiful Quadra Island to play in a chamber music festival.  Lucky me!
  13. Connection.
  14. Playing music with and/or for others connects me in a way that no other form of communication can – both to the people present and to the energy or spirit that lies beyond our physical presence.   It can be at times so uplifting that I can forget that I’m even on this planet!
  15. My orchestra job.
  16. I’ve learned a TON (at every level of life imaginable) and made some of the best friends one could ever possibly hope for in life.  Pretty good deal!

Your turn – please share with us what YOU are grateful for in music or life in general!

Thanks so much,

Sara Hahn
